Virechana — Therapeutic Purgation
Virechana is the Panchakarma therapy that may support cleansing of pitta dosha through the lower route. For patients with pitta-linked lifestyle patterns in Rajasthan's climate, it may be considered in Sharad ritu when the physician finds it suitable.
What is this treatment?
After oleation and fomentation, a controlled purgative is given; the physician monitors evacuations through the day. The samsarjana dietary return is not rushed.
Classical Ayurvedic background
Charaka Samhita (Kalpa/Siddhi Sthana) and Sushruta Samhita (Chikitsa Sthana) describe Virechana prominently for pitta-linked disorders.
Conditions it may support
- ·May support pitta-linked skin and digestive discomfort
- ·Internal purification and energy balance
- ·Headache patterns where pitta is contributory — per physician assessment
- ·Artava/pitta-linked reproductive imbalance — per vaidya decision — supportive shodhana direction
Who should undergo it?
- ·Pitta-predominant constitution with adequate strength, after clearance
- ·Patients selected for seasonal cleansing in Sharad ritu
Who should avoid it?
- ·Pregnancy — considered only after individual assessment.
- ·Active anorectal bleeding
- ·Acute fever, severe dehydration
- ·Not for children without explicit physician approval and supervision.
