Introduction — what Ushira is (educational)
Ushira is a classical aromatic root drug; botanical name Vetiveria zizanioides (modern synonym often Chrysopogon zizanioides) — family Poaceae. In Hindi/folk use: khas; in English: vetiver. Sanskrit synonym talk includes Sevya, Virana and related names. Searches: ‘ushira properties’, ‘khas ayurveda’, ‘vetiver ushira’.

Identity and synonyms
Botanical: Vetiveria zizanioides (L.) Nash / Chrysopogon zizanioides — deep roots with a distinctive cool fragrance. Summer khas screens/sherbet belong to folk practice; Ayurveda reads it in dravyaguna language.
Avoid confusion: khus-khus as poppy seed is a different item. Ushira = vetiver/khas grass root. Correct identity from medicine label and vaidya.
Rasa–guna–virya–vipaka
Educational summary (general nighantu direction):
• Rasa: tikta, madhura • Guna: laghu, ruksha • Virya: sheeta • Vipaka: katu • Dosha direction: pitta (and kapha) pacifying talk; caution excess ruksha in vata
Often linked with stambhana/dahashamana, mutrala and pleasant cardiac–aromatic framing — clinical selection by the vaidya.
Parts used — root
Principal medicinal part: root (khas root). Used in kwatha, cold infusions, panaka, aromatic water and asava class (Ushirasava educational reference). Externally: sometimes cool lepa/ubtan talk.
When buying, check root fragrance–dryness; adulterated perfume oil is not Ushira. Dose is vaidya-written.
Classical use directions
Classical discussion considers Ushira mentioned/supportive in daha, thirst, pittajwara-supportive direction, cooling in raktapitta-type talk, mutrakricchra and summer pathya. It also appears in yogas such as Ushirasava — by formulary edition and vaidya selection.
