Ela (Cardamom) — Classical Herb Guide (Jaipur)

Ela (Elettaria cardamomum) — rasa–guna–virya–vipaka, fruit/seed, deepana–pachana–hridya framing, vs Sthula Ela — educational dravya monograph.

Introduction — what Ela is (educational)

Ela / Sukshmaila is a classical aromatic dravya; botanical name Elettaria cardamomum (family Zingiberaceae). In Hindi: chhoti hari elaichi; in English: green / true cardamom. Sthula Ela (Amomum subulatum — large/black cardamom) is treated as a different drug — taste and virya–karma differ subtly.

Arogyasudha Ayurveda Hospital operates in Jaipur (Rampura Dabri, Tantiyawas) and at a Chomu centre under Vaidya Aditya Ghosalya (Reg NR/AY/RJ/0007555). The pharmacy card (/shop/pharmacy#ela) is educational. Ela is both a kitchen spice and a prakshepa drug in avaleha–Chyawanprash-type yogas (/shop/pharmacy chyawanprash references). This guide explains digestion–breath supportive framing — not a cure guarantee.

Identity and synonyms — sukshma vs sthula

Botanical (Sukshmaila): Elettaria cardamomum Maton — green capsule, aromatic seeds. Sthula Ela: usually Amomum subulatum — larger brown/black capsule. Both shastra and kitchen loosely say ‘elaichi’; formulary yogas more often specify Sukshmaila.

Search synonyms: elachi, elaichi, cardamom seeds, truti (in some texts). Patra pinda sweda’s Kerala name ‘Ela Kizhi’ is a leaf-bolus therapy — different karma from spice Ela (/treatments).

Rasa–guna–virya–vipaka

Educational summary (Sukshmaila — general direction):

• Rasa: katu, madhura • Guna: laghu, ruksha • Virya: sheeta in many texts (some practical talk of warming sensory feel) • Vipaka: madhura • Dosha direction: kapha–vata pacifying/balancing talk; individual caution in pitta excess

Linked with deepana, pachana, mukhashodhana, pleasant hridya aroma and shwasa–kasa supportive direction — clinical yoga is the vaidya’s.

Parts and yogas — avaleha prakshepa

Used: fruit (pod) and seed powder. Pathya–food: tea, kheer, panaka. Medicine: Chyawanprash/avaleha prakshepa, aromatic fraction in some ghrita–taila, mukhvasa churna.

Catalogue educational mention: cinnamon–cardamom etc. in Chyawanprash family (/shop/pharmacy) — not a full industrial spec. Ela alone is not an ‘immunity medicine’.

Classical use directions

Nighantu–prayoga discussion considers Ela mentioned/supportive in aruchi, ajirna-supportive direction, pleasant aroma in chhardi/hrillasa talk, mild support in kasa–shwasa, and mukhadurgandha contexts.

Limits: asthma attack, chest pain, acute vomiting–blood — modern emergency first. Related aromatic–cooling dravya: Ushira (/knowledge/guides/ushira-ayurvedic-herb-guide-jaipur).

Precautions

• Pitta–acidity/raktapitta tendency: excess sharp aroma may discomfort some • In hot–pitta states, excess spice tea: ask vaidya • With pitta-pacifying drugs/modern blood thinners: coordinate • Pregnancy: ordinary kitchen amounts often fine; medicinal powder/high dose via vaidya • Adulterated/coloured pods: check source • Children: food spice OK; medicinal dose vaidya

Pathya notes

Light elaichi–fennel mukhvasa after meals is common folk practice; in indigestion reduce heavy sweets plus excess spice together. In Jaipur heat keep very hot spice teas balanced. /diet-plan.
