Introduction — what Eranda is (educational)

Eranda is a major classical dravya; botanical name Ricinus communis (family Euphorbiaceae). In Hindi: arandi; in English: castor plant. Synonym talk includes Vatari, Chitrabija and related names. Best-known use direction: Eranda taila (castor oil) — snehana and virechana contexts; root, leaf and seed have distinct karmas.

Arogyasudha Ayurveda Hospital operates in Jaipur (Rampura Dabri, Tantiyawas) and at a Chomu centre under Vaidya Aditya Ghosalya (Reg NR/AY/RJ/0007555). The pharmacy card (/shop/pharmacy#eranda) is educational. Eranda also appears as an ingredient in yogas such as Dhanwantharam Tailam (/shop/pharmacy#dhanwantharam-tailam). This article is not a home ‘two spoons of castor oil’ plan.

Identity and synonyms

Botanical: Ricinus communis L. — large leaves, oil-rich seed. Medicine usually uses purified/medicinal-grade Eranda taila; chewing raw seed is linked with ricin toxicity direction — seed ingestion at home is prohibited.

Search synonyms: castor oil Ayurveda, eranda sneha, arandi tel, erandmoola. Do not treat industrial/laxative ‘castor oil’ and Ayurvedic sneha as one label — check source and vaidya direction.

Rasa–guna–virya–vipaka

Educational summary (differs by part; oil and root are read separately):

Eranda taila (general direction): • Rasa: madhura (some texts discuss katu–kashaya aspects) • Guna: snigdha, tikshna, sukshma, guru • Virya: ushna • Vipaka: madhura • Dosha direction: chiefly vatahara; virechana (mild–moderate) karma

Eranda root: separate mention in vata–amavata–shula directions. Leaf: sometimes external upanaha/swedana support talk. Properties are not a benefits list — suitability is the vaidya’s.

Parts and famous yogas — Eranda taila

• Seed oil (Eranda taila): snehapana, virechana, basti supportive base, external abhyanga — vaidya plan • Root: in kwatha/churna yogas for vata–ama direction • Leaf: external bolus/lepa contexts (ingredient in some oils)

Famous: Eranda taila itself; base/support in many vatahara oil–basti plans. Catalogue: Dhanwantharam Tailam (/shop/pharmacy#dhanwantharam-tailam). In Panchakarma snehana–virechana, dose is time-bound — /knowledge/guides/panchakarma-therapy-complete-guide-jaipur.

Classical use directions — vata, amavata, purgation

Classical–clinical discussion considers Eranda/Eranda taila mentioned/supportive in vatavyadhi, amavata, gridhrasi-supportive direction, sneha–virechana in constipation–vibandha, and low-back–joint abhyanga contexts — not a cure guarantee.

Related disease guides (educational): low-back/vata pain /treatments; search knowledge articles on gridhrasi. Do not confuse with the sharp purgative Indravaruni (/knowledge/guides/indravaruni-ayurvedic-herb-guide-jaipur).

Pregnancy and other cautions — important

Pregnancy: Eranda taila is associated with strong purgation/uterine stimulation direction — self-laxative or ‘cleansing oil’ in pregnancy is prohibited. Folk labour-induction use is dangerous. Only within a clear obstetric–vaidya plan if ever. In breastfeeding, do not take internal oil without advice.

Other: • Children — vaidya only • Diarrhoea, dehydration, acute abdomen, bowel surgery history — do not self-purge • Raw seed/industrial castor — do not ingest • Long-term daily self-castor oil — agni–depletion risk • With other laxatives/diuretics — coordinate

Pathya notes

In virechana/sneha plans: usually light digestible food, warm water, rest; less excess cold–dry–fried food. In vata pain keep regular sleep and avoid constipation — personal lists from vaidya. Yoga: gentle movement /yoga when pain is not acute.

Access in Jaipur

Buying a bottle after ‘Eranda oil Jaipur’ or ‘castor oil Ayurveda’ searches is common — risky without diagnosis. Arogyasudha: /consult first; catalogue /shop/pharmacy#eranda. Arogyasudha Ayurveda Hospital operates in Jaipur (Rampura Dabri, Tantiyawas) and at a Chomu centre under Vaidya Aditya Ghosalya (Reg NR/AY/RJ/0007555).

Limitations

Eranda does not guarantee curing amavata or vata disease ‘from the root’. Not a substitute for stopping modern arthritis/neuro medicines. Educational aim: understand the drug, Eranda taila and safety.
